The improvements in design to maternity and nursing bras are ongoing - thank goodness! Gone are the days when being pregnant or feeding your baby means you are only able to wear dull and functional lingerie. These days, wearing a designer nursing bra is an expected norm. For someone like me, who spent years revelling in luxurious lingerie, it meant I had to start my own maternity lingerie company in order to wear sexy, feminine underwear. The importance of the lingerie being both gorgeous and a perfect fit is paramount.

I am continually amazed at the number of women who still wear ill-fitting bras - the statistics are generally in agreement that this is around 80% of women! Your nursing bra must fit in order to encourage healthy breastfeeding, a beautiful and well supported silhouette and a feeling of comfort. And it can also include all the features synonymous with being a designer garment - exquisite fabrics and trims, fashion forward design and sophisticated styling.

Whether you are pregnant or not, you need to be professionally fitted. Dedicate an hour or so to this - you will be delighted at the benefits! You may identify a maternity range that suits your style and your budget. Even so, there will be size variations within that range dependent on whether you wear a full cup designer nursing bra, a half cup, A-Frame or side sling support. Your weight fluctuations are more extreme during pregnancy, your moods more changeable. These are both reasons for your designer bra to be fitted more regularly, generally around three months and again at about seven months. If your bra is puckering, riding up, the straps are digging in or you have chafing of the skin or sensitive nipple area - get re-fitted straight away! And don't forget to choose a bra that makes you feel ravishing too!

Your nursing bra should not have an underwire. Because of the changes in breast size and shape you will experience during the exciting stages of your pregnancy, the fit changes more quickly than with a regular bra. Nursing bras with underwire can be the cause of blockages and infections - the too narrow wire presses on the milk ducts and can result in unnecessary complications to breastfeeding, which isn't always the easiest of things to master - believe me!

There are myths surrounding nursing bras and the idea that if they are in the designer category, they are for show only. Not so! Don't fall into the trap of purchasing a stretchy maternity bra that will "grow with you", or one with a loose band over your diaphragm for expansion. The inclusion of gorgeous fabrics, teamed with power elastene, wider straps and back adjustors for larger sizes, multiple rows of eyelets for expansion and sexy, sophisticated styling means that designer nursing bras are what every pregnant and breastfeeding woman is entitled to. This is your time!

In the first trimester of pregnancy most women will outgrow their pre-pregnancy bras about the same time they outgrow their pre-pregnancy jeans and pants. So, as soon as you need to buy maternity jeans and more comfortable waistlines, go ahead and buy nursing bras that fit your comfortably with room to grow. Even though you will not be nursing anytime soon, they will fit you at some point in your nursing timeline.

There are a lot of different styles and price ranges in nursing bras on the market today, so it can be overwhelming for first time moms to know where to start in their search. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when shopping:

1) Nursing bras should have plenty of stretch and fit comfortably. When you are nursing, your breast size can fluctuate up to a full cup size over the course of the day. Some bras are designed to fit several cup sizes to help account for this ongoing change. Bras that fit too tight can lead to plugged ducts and breast infections called mastitis.

2) Bras should provide support from under the breast when the cup is open for nursing. This makes feeding easier and more comfortable as well as more discreet. It also makes re-closing the bra an easier task.

3) Avoid underwires for your first nursing bra. In the first few weeks your breast tissue is expanding very rapidly. Underwires can cut into milk producing tissue which can obstruct and clog the milk ducts and lead to infection. Once your milk supply settles down after the first month or two of nursing, you may be just fine with a properly fitted underwire bra, but it is usually better to wait past the early weeks.

4) You only need to start out with 3-4 bras for the first few weeks: one to wear, one to laundry, and one or two in the drawer. It's best to buy only one of a particular style to test it out to see how much you really like it. It you do like it, buy more of that style, maybe in different colors to keep it interesting. However, you do not want to buy too many bras in the early weeks because your size is subject to change and you may find your cup size has gone down after a month or so when your milk supply has settled down.

5) Larger busted women need nursing bras with better support. Also, if you are larger busted you may be more comfortable wearing a sleep or light support nursing bra at night. When you are nursing, not only are your breasts larger, they are also heavier. So, support becomes very important for comfort and to reduce permanent sagging.

6) During pregnancy your ribcage can expand several inches, affecting your bra band sizing. After you have your baby, your rib cage will gradually return to its pre-pregnancy size even though your cup size will remain larger if you are nursing. When you are fitting yourself for a nursing bra during the last months or pregnancy or soon after you have your baby, look for adjustable hooks on your bra band in the back. You will want to start out comfortably on the tightest setting so that your bra will continue to fit you as your rib cage goes down in size you and you tighten your band setting.

If you purchase a bra online or through a catalogue, follow the retailer's instructions for measuring for the correct size. Bra sizes can vary a bit from brand to brand, so it's important to purchase a bra that fits you correctly rather than one that is the size you think you should be. Most of all, do not wear a bra that is too tight in the cups or under the arm which could lead to clogged ducts. There are many fashionable nursing bra on the market today, but for starters go for comfort.

One of the first symptoms many women experience when they are pregnant is larger breasts. If you already wear a large cup size, this might make you nervous about buying new bras! While it may be tempting to keep wearing your old bras, remember that a properly fitted bra is very important when you are pregnant and nursing. A bra in the correct size will reduce back pain and promote breast health.

Plus Size Maternity Bras
You will first need new bras while you are pregnant. During this time, your breasts are not only larger, they are also heavier. You’ll need a very supportive bra, preferably one without an underwire. Since you’ll need to buy bras when you are pregnant, it is a good idea to go shopping for nursing bras too. At 30 to 32 weeks, your bust is about the same size that it will be when you start to breastfeed. If you buy your nursing bras at 30 weeks, not only will you be prepared when the baby arrives, you will also have comfortable bras to wear during the third trimester.

What Nursing Bras Should a Large-Breasted Woman Buy?
During this first shopping trip, be sure to buy two bras to bring with you to the hospital or birth center. Soon after birth, you will experience engorgement – when your milk comes in. While you are engorged, you could be a full cup size larger. Your first nursing bras should be slightly big in the cup and have some stretch. A no-wire bra is best for the first few weeks. Why buy two nursing bras for engorgement? You’ll want to have an extra clean nursing bra on hand during the first few busy days after your baby is born.

When you first start to breastfeed, your bra size can change every day – even every hour. Don’t worry; once you have a regular feeding schedule your size will be more stable. Then, you can go crazy with all kinds of nursing bras! Not too long ago, all nursing bras were white and plain, and plus-sized nursing bras were very difficult to find. Luckily, bra companies have realized that nursing mothers need more options, and nursing bras for large breasts are available at specialty bra stores. You can even buy a sexy lace bra with nursing clips.

How to Tell if Your Nursing Bra Fits
A poorly fitted bra will wreck havoc on your breast and back health. Here are some tips to make sure your maternity or nursing bra fits you correctly:

1) Make sure that all of your breast tissue sits inside the cup. If you are “spilling out” of your bra, it’s definitely not the right size. There should be no bump at the top, sides or bottom of the cup. If you are experiencing this problem, you need a larger cup size. Think about how comfortable you will be in a bra the fits – not what letter is on the tag. There’s no shame in being a G, H or larger cup size, in fact, some women pay a lot to be one!

2) Make sure the band is snug. This is the number one mistake that women with large breasts make when buying bras. Just because you have a large chest does not mean you need a large band Your bra band should lie in a straight line across your back and not rise up your back during the day. Do your bra straps dig into your shoulders? This is actually another sign that your band size is too loose. In a great fitting bra, your band does 90% of the work, so there won’t be pressure on your shoulders.

If you bra band is too big, you have to go down a band size AND go up a cup size. For example, if you are wearing 36D and the band is too loose, try size 34DD.

Many of today’s nursing moms are frustrated by the cumbersome, uncomfortable, monstrous and sometimes down right scary nursing bras on the market. Bella Materna is seeking to change that image with their incredibly stylish, sleek, comfortable yet sexy nursing lingerie products.

Bella Materna uses exclusively high quality imported Italian/Lycra material to craft their high end nursing lingerie in the US. This fabric is so strong and support that it works well for pumping use in most all of their nursing designs.

Their Anytime Nursing Bra is a bestseller and no-nonsense nursing bra with a sexy silhouette that actually fits and feels like a dream. This bra is so comfortable that many women sleep in it at night to nurse their babies. Although the Anytime Nursing bra has been around for a while by Bella Materna, they have improved this design more over the last few years with even better fit and support and a stronger band to anchor the bralet. This bra fits and supports almost like an soft underwire bra although it does not have any underwires. The Antime Nursing Bralet is as pretty on the back as the front, with a pretty ballet back design and a 4-stage hook and eye closure at the back center. The nursing access is easy, you just slide the cup edge over to the side of the breast for your baby to nurse. This Bralet is perfect for your last trimester of pregnancy and makes a fabulous first nursing bra.

Bella Materna’s Ruched Clip Nursing Bra also offers a comfortable and sexy fit while offering strong support without underwires. For successful breastfeeding you should buy the best nursing for you. Breastfeeding a baby – especially outside of the home - can be difficult at the best of times, so it's worth spending a little time and thought before you buy the nursing bra that is right for you.

Nursing bras are not the same as normal bras. When breastfeeding, the shape and size of the breast changes throughout the day and a good nursing bra can be easily adjusted to provide the support you need. Nursing bras also allow for the discrete insertion of breast pads, the cup linings are designed to avoid irritating already sore nipples and they allow for the flow of milk – blocked ducts can lead to mastitis. There’s no doubt that a correctly fitted, good quality nursing bra can make breastfeeding a whole lot easier. Here are some tips on choosing the best nursing bra for you.

The best time to buy a nursing bra is during mid to late pregnancy. By all means continue to wear pre-pregnancy bras until they are no longer comfortable, then go out and buy. Make sure the nursing bra you choose fits properly. This seems like obvious advice but most women don’t buy conventional bras that fit them correctly! Also, the nursing bra should allow for the insertion of breast pads. The nursing bra should be made of a stretchy material so that it moves with you. Finally, all good brands of nursing bras are very adjustable at both the strap and cup.

The nursing bra you buy should be easy to use. A good nursing bra will allow easy opening using just one hand – make sure you can close it one-handed. Most good quality maternity bras come with plastic clips or hooks and eyes - both are easy to open with one hand, though hook and eye can be trickier than plastic clips to redo.

The nursing bra should give you good support, especially if you need a plus size nursing bra. You can avoid back strain by getting a bra with good support.

Try to buy a nursing bra where the cup is lined with cotton - although many synthetic materials nowadays do let your skin breath. The material of the cup should let your skin breathe as sweat combined with breast milk can cause rashes and mastitis.

Many large-breasted women use under-wire bras as they like the support such bras provide. When breastfeeding it’s best to avoid under-wire nursing bras especially in the early postpartum weeks. Under-wire maternity bras can put pressure on milk glands and may lead to less milk production or blocked glands. Many modern nursing bras give ample support without using under-wiring. If you do want to buy an under-wire nursing bra, then it’s vital that it fits perfectly.

If you're planning on pumping often, you should consider buying a nursing bra that will work well with a hands free pumping system.

At nighttime you can wear a light nursing bra that that is made of stretchy material. These bras simply open by stretching and lifting the cup over your breast. Nighttime nursing bras are much more comfortable than day wear nursing bras.

Take care of your nursing bra. Following the manufacturer's instructions on how to wash and dry it.

Buy as many nursing bras as you can afford; you need to change your nursing bra every day.

Nursing bras can be sexy. There are now many pretty, stylish and sexy nursing bras on the market. Investing in one of these can be a real ‘pick-me-up’ especially on special occasions.

Buying the best nursing bra for you is not about buying an expensive or brand-name nursing bra: it's about buying a nursing bra that fits you perfectly, gives you the support you need, functions well and is pleasing to wear.

If you are one of the millions of new mother’s each year, you have either shopped for, or are looking to shop for a nursing bra. But how do you choose the right nursing bra for you? Do not purchase a nursing bra until late in pregnancy, as your breast size will change rapidly during the progression of your pregnancy!

There are several types of nursing bras currently on the market. Your personal preference and comfort will be the deciding factor in choosing the right nursing bra for you. You may have to try several styles before finding the one that works best for your lifestyle and comfort! Before purchasing the perfect nursing bra make sure you take a tape measure and measure around the largest part of your breasts. Than you need to measure right underneath your breasts around your rib cage. You can always visit a department store and ask someone in the bra department to ask them to measure you.

Similar to traditional front close bras, some nursing bras fasten with a clasp in-between the two cups in front. While this is convenient, this particular style may not allow as much discretion as you prefer. And you might fine this type of closure uncomfortable when your breasts are full with milk.

One of the more common nursing bras folds down on each cup with a small clasp near the cup on the shoulder strap. If you choose this type of nursing bra, make sure that the entire breast is revealed and not just the nipple. This type of nursing bra allows a fair degree of discretion and is normally quite comfortable.

Many first time moms are not sure when to purchase a nursing bra or why they even need one! Research shows that most women are not wearing the correct bra size although there are many quick and easy tips to help you select the correct one.

Why do I need a nursing bra?

* Most women experience an increase in their breast size during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
* Although this size change will vary greatly from woman to woman, it is usually at least one band size and one cup size.
* For example a woman who wore a pre-pregnancy size of 36c could expect to need at least a 38d.
* A nursing mother needs to select the correct size to avoid mastitis and plugged milk ducts.
* Wearing the correct nursing bra size will help prevent neck and shoulder aches and pains.

When should I purchase a nursing bra?

* It is usually best to wait until a few weeks before delivery to purchase your nursing bra.
* Remember that your ribcage will continue to expand to accommodate your growing baby.
* Choose a bra with several hooks on the band which you can use once your ribcage shrinks back after the baby is born.
* Your cup size will also continue to increase as your body prepares to produce breast milk.
* We do not suggest waiting until after the baby is born to purchase your nursing bra.
* Approximately 3-5 days postpartum your milk will “come in” and temporarily increase you cup size due to engorgement.

How should my bra fit?

* Most maternity and department stores have trained staff to help you choose the correct bra size.
* All the breast tissue should fit inside the cup. You should not see any part of your breast spilling out of the cup or side seams.
* Your bra should fit snuggly.
* The band should not rise up at the back – of it does you may need a smaller band size.
* If you choose an underwire bra, the underwire should fit around the breast and not pinch or squash it.

Many lactation professionals suggest than nursing moms wear softcup bras as the underwire can cause a clogged duct by digging in to the breast tissue.

How can I measure myself?
You’ll achieve best results if you measure yourself while wearing an unpadded bra. First you’ll need to calculate your band size. To do this you’ll need to measure around your rib cage just below your breasts. If you’re measuring yourself be sure to check that the tape is level all the way around! Add 5 to this number and this will be your band size. For example if this measurement is 29” you’ll add 5 and your band size will be 34. If this number is an odd number you’ll generally need to round up to the next even number.

Next you’ll need to determine your bust/cup size. You’ll need to measure around your bust at the fullest point. Again, you’ll need to make sure that the tape is level all the way around. The difference between the band size and the bust/cup measurement is your cup size. Each one inch represents one cup size. For example is the band size is 36” and the cup measurement is 38” you would wear a 36b. If difference is 1 inch you'll wear an A cup If differnece is 2 inches you'll wear a B cup If difference is 3 inches you'll wear a C cup If difference is 4 inches you'll wear a D cup If difference is 5 inches you'll wear a DD cup If difference is 6 inches you'll wear a E cup If difference is 7 inches you'll wear a F cup

You’ll find that different bra styles may fit you slightly differently so you’ll want to try on a few to ensure you find the most comfortable one. If you’re still unsure of your size or just want a second opinion – most stores have trained professions who are happy to help you or contact your local lactation consultant.

During pregnancy your bra size can increase by up to four sizes (yes thats right!) and it is extremely important that you get the adequate support for your breasts. If like me you are a bit 'fuller' on top then you will know how hard it can be to find a retailer that stocks bras above a DD size, and it is even harder if you have a small back (e.g 32G). It is extremely important that you don't admit defeat and try to 'squeeze yourself in' as this can cause your breasts to become painfully swollen and engorged and potentially block your milk ducts leading to infections.

A plus size nursing bra will help you to feel well supported, comfortable and confident and these days they come in more than just black and white styles! There are a selection of online retailers that sell good looking plus size nursing bras . They have flaps that can be opened and refastened quickly and easily to make breastfeeding quick, easy and discreet. While you may not feel that nursing bras are necessary it is definitely advised that you avoid underwired bras as they can cause blockages in your milk ducts. If you have decided that you do want to wear a nursing bra then the next best thing to do is to get measured, you can do this at home but it is definitely better to go to a store where they have specially trained staff on hand. Do not feel like you have to buy any of their bras if you get measured as the service is free and once you know your size you can buy them much cheaper on the internet. In any case if it is a plus size nursing bra you are after then the store you visit probably won't stock your size anyway.

You should buy at least two nursing bras so you'll always have one on hand while the other one is in the wash. I'd also recommend you buy some breast pads as well for leaking breast milk (especially in the early days). You can buy both reusable and disposable breast pads - which ever you prefer.

So wherever you decide to buy your plus size nursing bra from you will definitely benefit from having one and your breastfeeding experience will be that much more enjoyable.
